Can You Measure Your PD While Wearing Glasses?
Last updated: October 2026 | Reading time: 6 minutes
Short answer: it is better to take your glasses off. Lenses and frames can bend the image of your eyes, add glare, and hide the edge of your pupil, all of which make a photo-based PD measurement less reliable. If you cannot see well enough without them, there are workarounds.
Why glasses interfere
- Magnification or minification. Strong lenses make the eyes look larger or smaller than they are, which changes how many pixels separate your pupils.
- Reflections. Lenses reflect lights and windows, often exactly over the pupil.
- Frames. A thick frame can sit between the camera and the corner of your eye, confusing face detection.
- Coatings and tints. Anti-reflective coatings help; tints darken the iris edge.
For these reasons our tool warns about glare and eye visibility, and a result from a photo with glasses on should be treated with extra caution.
Best option: glasses off
Take the glasses off and look at the camera lens. If you are very short-sighted, you may not see the screen clearly, but you do not need to: the tool needs you to look at the small camera lens, not the screen. Ask someone to start the capture, or use the camera's timer in your phone's camera app and upload the photo.
Contact lenses
Soft contact lenses are generally fine because they sit directly on the eye and do not change how large the eye looks. If you wear them, put them in and measure as normal.
If you must keep your glasses on
- Tilt your head very slightly down or choose lighting that avoids reflections, but keep the face frontal.
- Light your face from the sides, not from straight on, to reduce glare on the lenses.
- Take many photos and look for the ones with no glare on the pupils.
- Do not use the number for important orders without confirming it with an optician.
Is a measurement over glasses accurate?
Not reliably, especially with strong prescriptions. If your lenses are strong, reading the number from an optician's pupillometer is the better route. See PD for high prescriptions.
